Our beautiful daughter was born on July 29, 2012 and we are overjoyed that our prayers have been answered! It's hard to adequately express how you feel when your dearest dreams come true.
John and I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has stopped by to take a look or followed our blog or helped our adoption journey along over the years. You know who you are, and you know how very grateful we are and the love we feel. We are so grateful for her birthparents and their families and still in awe of this beautiful little girl!

Adoption Has Changed Us - For The Better
Our time pursuing adoption has changed us for the better. John and I appreciate our time together more. The process has made us think about things we never considered, challenged our assumptions on important issues and made us more self-aware. It's helped us to understand who we are as individuals and as a couple more than I ever imagined. We love each other, in our little family of two, more than I ever dreamed. We have made deep friendships along the way. And we've shared in the joy and the sorrow that are both part of adoption. This journey has changed us for the better...especially me.

We're Sort of Famous!
Why? Well, there's a story there.
We've been hoping to adopt for quite some time and there have been so many ups and downs. But everyone's adoption journey is like that whether you're a hopeful adoptive parent or an expectant parent! One thing that we know for sure? We have met some AMAZING people along the way. Wonderful, caring, talented people that we would have never met otherwise. We're grateful for each and every person we've gotten to know!
Recently, Katie and I connected on Twitter. Katie writes for Mumbling Mommy, a blog written by moms all over the country. You should check it out!
Anyway, Katie was interested in knowing more about adoption and social networking. She wanted to write about it, too. So we had a great conversation on the phone. If you want to read the post, you can check it out on her blog:

We're so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the article...
And that is why we are sort of famous! ;)

How They Check Us out : The Adoption Homestudy Process
Hi!
Ever wonder how they determine that a couple is "qualified" to adopt? Want to know how exactly they check us out? I was thinking this weekend that lots of people might not know exactly how hopeful adoptive parents are checked out before they adopt a baby. Then I thought that would be really important information for you or anyone you know who might be considering adoption!
So, I thought I’d try to explain the process in this post! The adoption home study process is totally exciting and completely stressful for a hopeful family. Exhilarating because it’s the beginning of the process and you have lots and lots and LOTS to do! Stressful because you know all your adoption hopes and dreams rest on other people’s evaluation of very personal things about you. You worry about whether your house is clean enough, whether they'll look in THAT closet and whether your social worker will like you! Very few people have their lives examined so very closely. I’m happy and relieved to say we passed with flying colors!J
As hopeful adoptive parents, we’re completely and thoroughly screened in a “home study” process that is conducted by a licensed adoption agency. Our agency is here in Maryland and does adoption home studies for the DC, MD & VA area. The home study process begins with a phone call, a meeting and LOTS of paperwork! An adoption home study is basically a very thorough evaluation of our character, the stability of our marriage and our financial stability. They also evaluate our lifestyle and neighborhood, our readiness for a child and our medical histories. The home study process requires FBI and State background checks and Child Protective Services (CPS) clearances to check their databases and verify that we have no record of criminal activity or child abuse.
There are other checks as well. The County does a home inspection of our house. Another form and signature! The local Fire Department has to do an inspection as well. Yep, another form, another signature! Even our pets, Shorty and Syd, have to have proof of proper County pet licenses and shots! We also had to have thorough health physicals, including TB and HIV tests. Oh, and more forms and signatures from our doctors!
After all the paperwork is completed and reviewed, we had several meetings with our social worker, at our house. Her job as a social worker is to help us understand more about the overall adoption process, answer our questions, gain information about us and to make sure our home is a safe environment for a child. We spent time talking about our hopes to adopt and she “interviewed” each of us to write our life history. (that was totally fascinating, BTW) In a lot of ways, it was a really interesting part of the process!
We also had to complete a certain amount of education on adoption and parenting. So we took some classes at various training centers and even a couple online.
But the process continues even after we finally receive a placement and bring a beautiful baby home! They want to make sure that everything is going well and the baby is happy and healthy after we bring him or her home! So, the social worker will continue to monitor what’s going on and will do several post-placement visits…
That’s the adoption home study process in a nutshell! I hope it helps a little to understand how adoptive parents are evaluated and that it also helps you to feel more comfortable if you're considering adoption for your child.
We’re happy to say that we have an approved Maryland home study (3 years in a row now) and are ready to accept a placement at any time - even today!
WE ARE READY! J

The Annual Christmas Tree Hunt
Like alot of families, every year our favorite tradition is to go find our Christmas tree, cut it down and bring it home to decorate. We love to go to our favorite tree farm with the dog, drink hot cider and watch the kids help their parents choose a tree. It's a fun time of year and here in Maryland, it's also usually pretty nice outside and not too cold.
So, here are a couple of shots of our day yesterday...John and I are looking forward to Christmas and the year ahead and hope that you have a wonderful holiday too! <3

Dogs!
Do you have a dog that you love? We do!
John and I brought Shorty home three years ago - we wanted to be past the puppy stage (read: potty-training stage LOL) before we brought our baby home. In that time, he's sort of become our baby. Our spoiled, loveable Yorkie baby.
He is stubborn like most Yorkies. He likes things his way - he must sit on your lap a certain way to chew his bones - he doesn't always listen very well, and ok sometimes just ignores us.
He's also the most loveable little guy ever. He loves people and kids and other dogs. He even likes our cat, who is 16 and will have nothing to do with him. Nothing. But he keeps trying. :)
Love my Shorty-baby...What about you? Do you have a favorite pet?

Hot Summer, Good Friends and Birthday Week!
Just an update, I haven't posted in a while. That's mostly because we haven't done anything exciting lately. LOL But, I recently got a message from a wonderful visitor who commented that she enjoyed reading about our journey, so I was moved to post an update...I thank her for getting to know us a little!
It's been amazingly hot here in Maryland lately and that makes it a good time to hang out at the pool. I enjoy hanging out there with a good book, visiting with my stay-at-home Mommy friends and watching the kids run around and scream as they have an awesome time in the water. I've also been getting an education on how to teach your kid to put her/his face under the water. :) They all seem to find this a challenge initially but are SO proud of themselves when they accomplish it. It seems to take a few rounds of tears first, though.
Last month, I was lucky enough to finally meet a very good friend of mine. That might sound strange but my friend lives on the other side of the country and we've become friends online as we both move forward in our adoption journeys. It was AWESOME to finally meet her and her family. We have gotten to know each other so well that it really felt more like seeing family you haven't visited in a long time - it never felt like "meeting for the first time." And so, John and I felt very blessed to have a chance to spend time with them - and to have such a fantastic family going through this experience at the same time. I'm lucky to have met some amazingly wonderful women hoping to adopt and feel loved and supported by them everyday. I hope that I have also, in some small way, helped each of them when they needed a friend. I hope I can meet them all one day!
What else? John's birthday was recently and so it was once again "Birthday Week." This is our annual tradition of celebrating John's birthday for the entire week. Yes, 7 Days. No, a day just isn't long enough to celebrate the birth of my love. ha ha This all started as a joke because when we first met, he told me that his Mother ALWAYS celebrated his birthday for the entire week. Now, his sister disputes that completely but we have kept our little tradition. ;) I enjoy the week, giving him loads of extra attention and planning things that he loves to do.
So, I leave you with a photo from Birthday Week's crabfeast...I hope that you are having a wonderful summer wherever you may be...

I'd Forgotten How Much I love this Song...
"From This Moment On"
(I do swear that I'll always be there.
I'd give anything and everything and I will always care.
Through weakness and strength, happiness and sorrow,
for better for worse, I will love you with
every beat of my heart.)
From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on
From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on
I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you
From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on
You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you
From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment
I will love you as long as I live

A Work in Progress!
So, I've been doing a major overhaul of our blog. Major. But even though I'm in over my head, I'm learning alot and I love that.
I'm hoping that it'll be more helpful to you when you stop by and express who we are a little better when I'm done. If you have any comments or suggestions - let me know!

Someone Special Became a Mommy this Week
We met a very special, committed young woman this summer and she had her baby boy last week. Even though we haven't heard from her in a while, we are so happy for her! And even though we don't know whether she'll parent her baby or not, we keep her in our prayers and hope for lots of joy and love in their lives.
Happy birthday, little one. And congratulations to B, even though we aren't in touch...Publish Post

Waiting Patiently is Hard...
As much as I try to be a patient person, I have to admit I'm not always as patient as I would like. Especially while driving, or waiting in line at the grocery store. LOL So, this part of our adoption journey can be hard...waiting.
As any adoptive parent will tell you, there are many hoops to jump through on the way. Homestudies, physicals, background checks, profiles to write and so many other items to cross off the list. Those days are busy and you work your checklist, get things done and breath a sigh of relief when you're "done." Only...you're not "done." :) Now the waiting begins...waiting and hoping to be parents and waiting for that one special woman who will choose you to be the parents of her child. Now, her journey is harder and there's no doubt about it. So, we try to wait patiently. Planning for the future of a baby that we already love and can't wait to meet. And waiting to hear from that incredible person we hope to get to know and include in our future too!
Our adoption journey is teaching me to be more patient and to have faith that when it's meant to be, it will all fall into place!
We hope you are well and that you'll contact us - even if you just have questions or need someone to listen...

What a Summer!
We've had some serious ups and downs this summer but we're back on course and optimistic! We're still hoping to make a wonderful connection... If you're considering adoption or know someone who is, we'd love to hear about your plans, your hopes and dreams...

I bought a new book...
Throughout our adoption journey, I've been meeting some incredible people. Some are other hopeful adoptive parents. Others are birthmothers who have found families for their children. Everyone's experience is different and yet so very much the same in many ways. I am always amazed at how much I learn from each and the support and encouragement I've received.
The book I bought was written by a birthmother, Kelsey Stewart, and it says everything simply but wonderfully. It's called The Best For You and it explains the choice of adoption from a Birthmother's point of view. I love it. If you'd like to check out the book or Kelsey's blog, here's the link: http://thebestforyoubook.blogspot.com/
Hope you're doing well! Be sure to take a look at our Letter to Expectant Parents - the link's right there on the right! :)
